Background

Every year, Nordic healthcare systems perform tens of thousands of unnecessary breast biopsies because standard imaging cannot definitively rule out cancer. NORDIC LIGHT aims to bring quantum technology directly into the clinic with Deep Light Vision’s (DLV) Ultrasound-Optical Tomography (UOT). It utilizes quantum-enabled optical filters to extract spatially resolved deeptissue metabolic signatures, including hypoxia and neoangiogenesis, that traditional imaging misses.

This 2.5-year project will test the UOT technique across the Nordic region, through joint clinical studies in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Year 1 establishes the clinical baseline at Skåne University Hospital (Malmö), Sweden.
Late Year 1 and Year 2 expand into a multi-site trial involving 240–300 patients, with onboarding of Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark and Nordlandssykehuset in Bodö, Norway.

The project will also deliver a clinical-grade UOT prototype designed for seamless use by healthcare professionals, minimizing the need for on-site physicists.

Nordic added value

The clinical study by NORDIC LIGHT intends to provide clinical evidence of the UOT hardware’s ability to safely exclude cancer. Successful results would provide a path to eliminate surgical anxiety for many women and could save the Nordic healthcare systems more than a hundred million SEK annually.

As a byproduct, this project will identify the metabolic fingerprints of lesions to advance future early detection of aggressive breast cancers and optimization of neo-adjuvant treatments, with the goal of saving lives, reducing the everity of cancer treatments, and generating additional healthcare savings.
