Objective
The five Nordic prime ministers have a joint vision for the Nordic countries: the Nordic region will become the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030. A key component of this vision is the Nordics as a circular and bio-based region. The Nordic businesses and industries have a crucial role in realizing vision 2030 by transitioning to circular business models.
Circular business models have the potential to improve and reduce material flows, reduce CO2 emissions, and enable sustainable growth. The circular economy holds significant value potential, and it is estimated that up to $140 billion can be captured by 2030 in the Nordics if the circular economy is implemented at scale. To realize the trapped value, collaboration is required across the entire value chain with traditional and new businesses. An ecosystem approach across the value chain is needed to fully close the circle.
At the same time, Nordic industries have pointed out data sharing as a key enabler for circular transition. According to the report “Data Sharing for a Circular Economy in the Nordics” , the maturity level of data sharing between companies is still low, and there is a need for supporting companies on how they can utilize data sharing as a driver to develop new circular earning models. However, there are already innovative examples in the Nordics where data sharing is driving circular value, and the report illustrates several of these examples. This indicates that the Nordic market is at the beginning of a potential shift towards a circular economy where data can flow freely between all the actors in a circular value chain.
The findings of the report underline the need to be able to point to real, concrete examples of data sharing for circular business in the Nordics. By showcasing how data sharing can increase circularity and create financial value, more businesses will be motivated to follow. In addition, pilot projects can help identify and communicate needs in the market and regulatory landscape that can facilitate even greater sharing and circular applications. Inspirational use cases are also needed to inspire and prepare Nordic companies for both finding business value and compliance value in data sharing, given the upcoming EU regulations. Furthermore, more showcasing of examples of data sharing not only between two companies but in larger ecosystems and value chains and across industries is especially needed.
Lastly, Nordic policymakers need concrete recommendations going forward: how the policies can facilitate and encourage companies to share data to develop circular business models.

Background
Circular business models have been one of the key action areas of the Nordic Ministers of Trade and Industry since 2018. The aim is to accelerate the transition to a circular economy in the Nordics and to develop the Nordics further as agile frontrunners within circular economy and circular business models. These are important, concrete steps in the quest to make Nordic businesses and industries green, circular, and carbon-neutral in line with the Nordic 2030 Vision: The Nordic region to be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030.
