During spring 2024, the Nordic Network for Electric Aviation NEA has been on a Nordic policy tour meeting with policy makers and representatives from the Nordic aviation industries. The purpose of the tour has been to collect knowledge and get an understanding of activities and current development within electric aviation in each of the Nordic countries.

The first meeting took place in Copenhagen in April and the tour was finalized in Iceland on 30 May. The network will now gather all the input in a report to be presented for the Nordic Ministers for Transport and Infrastructure in Gothenburg 14. August.
“NEA is a prime example of what we can do together within mobility and aviation in the Nordics. And now we take it to the next level by presenting it to the Nordics Ministers. I think this is really a unique opportunity,” says Nina Egeli, Head of Green Mobility program at Nordic Innovation.
The report will give Nordic politicians and decision makers a knowledge base on the current development in the other Nordic countries. The network hopes that this will help to accelerate the development of electric aviation even faster.
“The idea behind the policy tour is to align the developments done by the industry, represented by the NEA partners, with policy and regulatory level developments to ensure that optimal coordination takes place and that all countries stand ready to implement electric aviation within the next few years. Another important goal for us is that cross-border Nordic routes are in operation from the outset,” says Nina Egeli.
Fly electric between Roskilde and Læsø
The policy mapping includes information such as net zero aviation strategy, planned routes, national programs for research innovation and development, support tools for infrastructure expansion, current laws and regulations and available financial tools.
In Denmark, the first collaboration on electric flights has been agreed on between Væridion, Copenhagen Helicopter and Copenhagen Air Taxi. The new agreement includes a route between Roskilde and Læsø with take off in 2029/2030. “This is the first step to many new domestic routes in Denmark and the Nordics,” says representative from NISA – the Nordic Initiative for Sustainable Aviation – one of the NEA partners.
The Nordic Network for Electric Aviation NEA has also developed a new simulation tool for electric aviation. The new tool will be launched on 14 August together with the Nordic policy mapping report.
Nordic Network for Electric Aviation NEA
The overall aim of the Nordic Network for Electric Aviation NEA is to speed up the transition of electric aviation in the Nordics. The project is now in its second phase where the aim is to:
- Create a decision support system that will enable stakeholders to optimize infrastructure, operations and human factors for the future of electric aviation.
- Prepare destinations for electric aircraft by mapping out necessary infrastructure changes
- Evaluate safety and security requirements, adapt and prepare requirements for electric aviation
- Easing the implementation of electric aviation in the Nordics through focused communication activities, specifically aimed towards policy makers, technology providers, broader industry stakeholders, investors as well as customers
Nordic Innovation has supported the project since 2019.
