From Geology to Geopolitics: Norway's and the Nordic Region's Position in Critical and Strategic Value Chains.

Europe is operating in an increasingly unpredictable geopolitical and industrial landscape, marked by growing strategic rivalry, trade tensions, and reduced access to critical and strategic minerals and metals. This has brought renewed attention to who actually controls the value chains that underpin the energy transition, industrial competitiveness, and national security.

Two new reports show that Norway and the Nordic region already hold strong positions in critical and strategic value chains, while also possessing significant untapped potential. The region combines a robust geological resource base with advanced processing industries, technological expertise, and stable regulatory frameworks, providing a strong foundation for strengthening its role as a supplier to European industry. This raises a central question: How can Norway and the Nordic region translate these advantages into tangible positions within strategic value chains?

Kritiske og strategiske råmateriale i Norge - posisjoner og potensialer

This spring, Norway and Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on critical minerals. Canada has one of the world's leading mining and mineral processing industries, strong capital markets, and a well-established role in global value chains.

What can we learn from Canada, and how can those lessons help strengthen Nordic and European positions in critical and strategic value chains?
