Nordic Innovation Annual Report 2011

In 2011 we have worked proactively to facilitate innovation, cooperation, and initiatives and sharing competence in and between the Nordic countries, as well as interacting on the international arena.

    Lead was one of the earliest heavy metals to be identified as a toxic environmental pollutant in widespread use throughout the world. Its use has been or is being phased out in many applications -- paints and leaded petrol, for example -- but the electrical and electronics (EE) sector has proved a stubborn case, in part because lead is still a key component of tin-lead solders used in equipment and components, notably printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Nutrients and other bioactive substances isolated from fish as well as fish in itself can be used as ingredients for functional foods. There are several obstacles to overcome before the potential in fish can be exploited.

    Risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension rise continuously with increasing weight, creating a huge overlap between the prevention of obesity and the prevention of a variety of chronic diseases. New EU-legislation allows the use of weight regulation and satiety-related health claims on foods, if sufficient scientific evidence exists behind the claims. This offers new opportunities to the Nordic food industry.

    In the Nordic countries, the food industry is of significant importance to the economies. Strong cultural traditions mixed with high quality have been its strength, resulting in good reputation. However, that is not enough in order to be competitive in the global food market.     Nanosized soot particles are a serious health hazard in urban air. They can penetrate deep into the lungs and their fat solubility makes possible their accumulation in other organs such as the brain. Legislation has therefore continuously reduced the allowable emission levels and raised requirements for reporting the status of the exhaust system (OBD, on board diagnostics) in diesel powered vehicles.

    Background Demand for air travel is growing rapidly. Shortfalls in capacity and other constraints on the efficiency of airports and aircraft operations have negatively impacted the environment. The need to enhance efficiency without increase in emissions, within finite airspace and airport resources while still ensuring high levels of safety, has grown considerably. This feasibility study is the first initiative for co-operation between air navigation service providers (ANSP), airports, airline companies and industry.
