Nordic Built - joining forces for a sustainable built environment

  • Publisert 03.01.2012

DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND

Nordic Built (previously known as Nordic innovation programme on climate friendly buildings) was approved by the Committee of Senior Officials for Business and Energy policy (EK-N) in November 2010. It is led by the Danish Enterprise and Construction Authority (EBST), with Nordic Innovation as programme secretariat. The programme is part of the Nordic co-operation programme for Innovation and Business policy 2011-2013, and also one of the Globalization initiatives initiated by the Nordic Prime Ministers.

The programme is launched to help realise the vision for the Nordic region – to be a leading innovative region in green growth and welfare. Innovation and entrepreneurship is seen as key to solve the major global challenges that we are facing. Among these is the need to cut CO2 emissions and energy consumption. Energy use in buildings constitutes 40% of the total energy consumption. The Nordic region has already made this challenge its priority, and there are substantial activities, initiatives and programmes running nationally already. The Nordic innovation programme is to build upon and cooperate closely with these, and thus enhance the Nordic region’s unique position to develop global solutions that will ensure a sustainable built environment of the future.

The Nordic region is known for its strong democracies, social welfare and equality, and the Nordic way of life are often referred to. This is a brand that receives acknowledgement and respect from abroad, and is characterized by words like well-being, sustainability, honesty, functionality. The Nordic building sector boldly may claim ownership of the Nordic way of life, and profit from it.

PURPOSE

The programme is launched to help realise the vision for the Nordic region – to be a leading innovative region in green growth and welfare. Accelerate Nordic competitive concepts for a sustainable built environment.

NORDIC INNOVATION CONTRIBUTION

The project is funded by Nordic Council of Ministers and Nordic Innovation.

PROJECT OUTLINE

The Nordic region is today delivering a range of single components to low energy buildings, such as insulation material, pumps, windows and ventilation systems. Furthermore, the Nordic region is known for high quality architecture, characterized by its durability, use of daylight, functional design and implementation of natural materials. Combined with strict regulations and high ambitions to make its built environment the best in the world, the Nordic region possess appropriate building blocks that can ensure the development and export of energy efficient solutions to the building sector.

However, despite the Nordic building sector’s strongholds, the Nordic region has not yet managed to position itself as world leading within green building. There is thus a need for a targeted effort to highlight and promote the Nordic building sectors strongholds, abilities and solutions. This effort is to create awareness both within the Nordic region and outside to the qualities that characterizes Nordic sustainable building.

The clear link between the Nordic identity, strengths and values (i.e. social consciousness, functionality, democracy) and sustainability is evident, and the Nordic building sector can proudly claim ownership of the term sustainable. Nordic Built will evolve around the core of what is Nordic, revitalize it, and make it the centre of the Nordic building sector’s competitive advantage. Nordic Built will demonstrate that the Nordic region can deliver sustainable and energy efficient solutions and concepts for the future built environment.

This objective is to be met by focusing on the following strategic goals:

  • Identify. Highlight Nordic strengths, competence and values to provide a platform uniting the Nordic building sector and accentuate its close link to sustainability. The platform is to be widely known and owned throughout the Nordic building sector, and form a competitive advantage the sector can profit from.
  • Collaborate. Achieve remarkable results by combining the strengths and competences of the Nordic region, and effectuate increased competitiveness
  • Build.  Realize the potential of the Nordic building sector by demonstrating Nordic strengths and values in concrete projects. The concrete projects will develop new, holistic concepts and primarily address the topics of sustainable retrofitting and cost models.

PARTICIPANTS

It is led by the Danish Enterprise and Construction Authority (EBST), with Nordic Innovation as programme secretariat. The programme is part of the Nordic co-operation programme for Innovation and Business policy 2011-2013, and also one of the Globalization initiatives initiated by the Nordic Prime Ministers. It is a clear goal of the programme to have close relations to national innovation and funding agencies and programmes.

TIMELINE

2011-2013

ACTIVITIES

The programme will be carried out through the execution of several modules in the time span 2011-2014. The modules will cover a range of interconnected activities, and to a certain degree build upon each other. Together these modules will create a powerful and targeted programme, tailored to achieve the overall objective.

If the Nordic region is to position itself as world leading when it comes to delivering sustainable concepts to the built environment, the innovation programme must facilitate innovation and create cross-sectoral cooperation. To achieve this, an untraditional approach is needed that attracts creative, visionary and competent persons and environments from throughout the region to participate in the programme.

The modules will demonstrate how the issues highlighted in the Nordic workshops can be addressed:

  • the energy inefficient existing building stock
  • cost related issues
  • unawareness among the building professionals

The activities in the modules will span from creating attention and raising awareness to development of radical innovation and holistic solutions, from business model innovation to venture capital, involving the whole sector, from established companies to entrepreneurs, from researchers to designers.

In short, the modules will establish what the Nordic building sector is and what the Nordic building sector can achieve.

In October 2010, the Nordic Trade and Industry Ministers agreed on a new industrial and innovation policy cooperation program focusing on green growth. Six lighthouse projects were launched for the period 2011-2013. Nordic Innovation is contributing to the realization of the projects together with the Nordic countries.
