Successful project with innovative solar cells

The aim of the Nordic DSC project was to create a new type of transparent solar cell with different colors and aesthetical appearance for future implementation in building facades.

A prototype consisting of flexible and transparent dye-sensitized solar cells (DSC) with photonic crystal was manufactured using industrially viable methods. The device was based on a state of the art type of flexible, transparent and conductive glass substrate.


The work consisted in developing nanomaterials to be used as solar cell components. It also included developing new processing methods for such materials.


- Flexible, cheap solar cells will be strategically important for integration both in consumer electronics products and buildings. The commercial value of the DSC project is high, as it proves that the novel concept can be realized, says project leader Henrik Lindström from NLAB Solar in Sweden.


The final goal of the Nordic Innovation funded project was to manufacture a flexible transparent solar cell containing a novel porous photonic crystal for increased efficiency and aesthetical color control. Real life testing is currently being done and will be followed up during 2013.


- On the whole project was a success in terms of reaching the tangible objectives, which prove a viable commercial future, Lindström says.
