The day is being marked by several events, with the annual President's Ball as the grand final.
The day began with a raising of the Finnish flag at Tähtitorninmäki hill in Helsinki, a tradition that started in the 1950s.
Students are participating in torchlit processions in Helsinki and other Finnish cities.
President Tarja Halonen is awarding medals and decorations to more than 4,000 citizens for achievements within different areas. The President’s Ball reception will begin at 19:00.
The Finnish parliament declared independence on 6 December 1917. Before that, the country has been a part of Sweden, and later a Grand Duchy in the Russian empire.
